This weekend Amsterdam is filled with people for the Uitmarkt, which starts today. It’s the national kick-off of the cultural season in Amsterdam, which basically means that there’s plenty to do in the city and more than enough events for us to enjoy. It also means, however, that the entire city is crowded with people and the Leidseplein and Museumplein are basically hell on earth. Since Mrs Mokum always tries to find alternatives for you that not everyone knows about, I have a tip that I think you will all enjoy.
Normally my field is film, but today I’d like to make an exception for an amazing bit of theater. The entire weekend of the Uitmarkt there are 25-minute sessions of laughter and relaxation at the Doelenzaal on the Kloveniersburgwal. You can find the beautiful building in the middle of the city center, located at the canals giving you that Mokum vibe we all love so much. The Doelenzaal was built in 1883, but has been used for the international dance theater since 1985. I know, I know, it sounds like something really specific that you have to especially be into to enjoy, but this weekend the Doelenzaal will be used for an entirely different purpose. It will be the home of theater duo Van Rossum & Herfst with “De Meisjes van de Bijenkorf.”
“De Meisjes van de Bijenkorf” (The Girls of the Bijenkorf, our most high-end department store) are portrayed by Nikki van Rossum and Julia Herfst. I can already tell you their show will be the loudest you’ll laugh all weekend. I was lucky enough to see their performance before the premiere, and I can tell you that it’s shameless, it’s hilarious, and it’s a breath of fresh air in a world where everyone is too serious all of the time. The story brings you right back to the 60s and depicts how you should definitely not treat your customers. Their brutal honesty aims to translate a boring job into comic relief and they succeeded: my cheeks still hurt the day after.
Nikki and Julia met at the Frank Sanders Akademie, a musical school right in our own city. The two of them are locals! I asked Nikki how the two of them met up, and she told me it was as simple of a cliche as can be: the girls were in the same class. By doing a school assignment together, they discovered they have the same sense of humor that they both wanted to translate to the stage. Luckily, their joint humor worked out, and now here we are! The girls are still up and coming, but word has spread and they are slowly reaching out to a bigger audience. This performance in the Doelenzaal is their first big break, which is all the more reason to go out and support your local talent.
I have a feeling these two will make it big, so go out and see them before their prices are higher than the sky! This weekend’s act is entirely free to go see. I know I’ll be there! And let’s be honest: the world needs more laughter, and so do you.
